Cleveland Orchestra Performs Regional Premiere of Stewart Copeland's GAMELAN D'DRUM Tonight, 10/5

Cleveland Orchestra Performs Regional Premiere of Stewart Copeland's GAMELAN D'DRUM Tonight, 10/5

The Cleveland Orchestra performs the Cleveland premiere of Stewart Copeland's Gamelan D'Drum in the first KeyBank Fridays@7 concert of the 2012-13 season at Severance Hall. Joining the Orchestra for this work will be the Dallas-based world percussion ensemble D'Drum, in their Cleveland Orchestra debut. Gamelan D'Drum is scored for symphony orchestra and more than 70 world percussion instruments.

Prior to the Orchestra's performance of Gamelan D'Drum, Stewart Copeland, a 2003 inductee of Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the fifth greatest drummer of all time, will speak about his piece onstage with Jamey Haddad, world percussionist and curator of Fridays@7. In addition, the Rock Hall's Lauren Onkey, vice president of education and public programs, and Jason Hanley, director of education, will author an article for the Orchestra's program book about the intersection of rock and classical music.

James Feddeck, now in his fourth season as assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra, leads the concert, which opens with Orchestral Excerpts from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Felix Mendelssohn, followed by Maurice Ravel's Suite No. 2 from Daphnis and Chloé. Performing with the Orchestra in the Ravel suite will be the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, prepared by Cleveland Orchestra Director of Choruses Robert Porco and Assistant Director of Choruses Lisa Wong.

Following the concert, the Jamey Haddad Quartet performs in the Bogomolny-Kozerefski Grand Foyer for the after-party. (To begin the evening, Israeli jazz pianist Alon Yavnai performs in Reinberger Chamber Hall prior to the Orchestra's 7 p.m. concert. He will be joined by the Cleveland Institute of Music Improvisational Ensemble.)

A three-movement work for world percussion and symphony orchestra, Gamelan D'Drum was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for the Dallas world percussion ensemble D'Drum. The work was given its world premiere by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and D'Drum under the direction of Jaap van Zweden at Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas on February 5, 2011. (Excerpts from the world premiere performance of Gamelan D'Drum can be viewed by clicking on the D'Drum link above.) Stewart Copeland, the former drummer of the rock band The Police, is one of the most influential drummers of the past 30 years. In 2003, The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Stewart Copeland is also a composer of operas, ballets, chamber music pieces, and groundbreaking contemporary film scores. His first opera, Holy Blood and Crescent Moon, was commissioned by Cleveland Opera, which presented the world premiere of the work in October 1989.
