Composer Heiner Goebbels' I WENT TO THE HOUSE BUT DID NOT ENTER Set for Lincoln Center's White Light Festival, 11/13 & 14

In March 2012, German director-composer Heiner Goebbels was awarded the prestigious International Ibsen Award for his "genuinely groundbreaking" work. Previous winners include directors Peter Brook and Ariane Mnouchkine. This November, Lincoln Center's White Light Festival presents the celebrated director's staged concert in three tableaus, I went to the house but did not enter, set to texts by T.S. Eliot (The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock), Samuel Beckett (Worstward Ho), Maurice Blanchot (The Madness of the Day), and Franz Kafka ("Excursion into the Mountains"), that unfold as meditations on aging, mortality and the vicissitudes of modern life. The texts are sung by the four members of Britain's renowned, all-male Hilliard Ensemble (for whom the work was conceived), giving voice to the authors' protagonists in scenes where, "Light, image, movement, and music combine to form exquisitely drawn stage pictures." (The Boston Globe)

Performances take place November 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rose Theater, Frederick P. Rose Hall, 60th and Broadway, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Tickets, which start at $25, are available online at WhiteLightFestival.org, by calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500, or at the Avery Fisher or Alice Tully Hall box offices, Broadway and 65th Street. Programs, artists, schedules, and tickets prices are subject to change.

There will be a post-performance discussion on November 13 with Heiner Goebbels in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Large Rehearsal Room. The post-performance White Light Lounges, where performers and audience members can meet and talk, will take place on November 13 at the David Rubenstein Atrium, Broadway between 62nd & 63rd Streets, and on November 14 at American Table Cafe and Bar by Marcus Samuelsson at Alice Tully Hall, Broadway at 65th Street.

Conceived, composed and directed by Goebbels, I went to the house but did not enter has lighting design and staging by Klaus Grunberg, costume design by Florence van Gerken, and sound design by Willi Bopp. Lincoln Center's Great Performers/New Visions series presented the director's Stifters Dinge in December 2009, in the Park Avenue Armory. His Songs of Wars I Have Seen was presented in March 2011 in Alice Tully Hall.

Heiner Goebbels is one of today's most important contributors on the contemporary music and theater scene. His compositions for ensembles and orchestras are performed worldwide and his music theater works and staged concerts are regularly produced by Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and the Ensemble Modern. Goebbels is a professor at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) and President of the Theatre Academy Hessen. From 2012 to 2014, he serves as the artistic director of the International Festival of the Arts, Ruhrtriennale. http://www.heinergoebbels.com/

Unrivalled for its formidable reputation in the fields of both early and new music, the Hilliard Ensemble (countertenor David James, tenor Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor Steven Harrold, and baritone GorDon Jones) is one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups. The group's standing as an early music ensemble dates from the 1980s and it has established long-standing relationships with many composers and orchestras, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, and the London, New York, and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestras, among others. http://www.hilliardensemble.demon.co.uk/
