The Hartt School presents a variety of music, dance, and theatre performances this February, many of which are free, and all are open to the public. Mainstage Opera: Die Fledermaus
The Hartt School's Hartt Opera Theatre presents Johann Strauss II's frothy comic operetta, Die Fledermaus, Thursday through Saturday, January 31 through February 2, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, February 3, at 3:00 PM, in Millard Auditorium. Die Fledermaus is a perennial favorite that features a lush score performed by a sizeable live orchestra comprised of Hartt's own instrumental students. Gloriously costumed, fully staged, and sung in English, this comedic tale of revenge is sure to enthrall audiences, from seasoned opera fans to those new to the genre. Vincent Herring Master Class
Vincent Herring, saxophone, presents a master class with Hartt students, open to the public for observation, on Wednesday, February 13, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, in Room 342, Fuller Music Center. Annual Hartt Collage Concert
Join The Hartt School for a glorious evening filled with continuous music, dance, and theatre, on Thursday and Friday, February 15 and 16, 7:30 PM, Lincoln Theater. Performances include theatre and vocal selections from Die Fledermaus, Miss Saigon, Antigone, Follies, and West Side Story; orchestral, chamber music, choral, guitar ensemble, percussion ensemble, brass ensemble selections, alumni folk ensemble, and dance selections, including the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Sensemaya," Rock Etude No. 7, "In the Barn," Concerto No. 11 in D Minor, "The Wheel," "Just Give Me Time," and "The Road Home;" and more. Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series featuring Imani Winds
The Hartt School presents Imani Winds, part of the Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, on Thursday, February 21, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium. This globe-circling, genre-blurring quintet has seemingly collaborated with every significant musical figure of our time, from Wayne Shorter and Paquito D'Rivera to Yo-Yo Ma and Elliott Carter. With a deep commitment to commissioning new music, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African and Latin American traditions. Imani has performed in every important venue and series in North America, and this year makes it debut appearances in France, Brazil and China. I Hate Hamlet
Associate Professor of Theatre Diana Moller-Marino directs The Hartt School's presentation of Paul Rudnick's dramatic comedy I Hate Hamlet, Thursday through Saturday, February 21-23, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, February 24, at 3:00 PM, in the Kent McCray Theater, Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. An actor who is to play the part of Hamlet in Central Park has a fear of the role. While in his apartment, he calls on the help of a former tenant, the ghost of John Barrymore, to help him overcome his fear. The Impossible Dream-50 Years of Goodspeed Musicals
On Saturday, February 23, at 7:30 PM at The Bushnell, Hartt Music Theatre students, under the direction of Michael O'Flaherty, join HSO and Goodspeed Musicals to celebrate the golden anniversary of the home of the American Musical. This special collaboration features special guest artists and selections from Goodspeed originals that moved to Broadway including Annie, Man of La Mancha, plus audience favorites from dozens of shows like 1776, Show Boat, and Brigadoon. Tickets range in price from $20-$67.50. Student tickets are $10, and $25 tickets are available for patrons age 40 and under.
