Innovative composer and violinist Daniel Roumain comes to Emory's Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on Friday, Feb. 22 for residency activities and a concert. The classically trained musician crosses genres and cultures; and is perhaps the only artist whose collaborations span the worlds of Philip Glass, Cassandra Wilson, Bill T. Jones, Savion Glover and Lady Gaga.

Feb. 22 Schwartz Center events with Roumain:

Roumain presents "Hip-Hop Studies and Etudes" to Emory and Atlanta-area K-12 students. Inspired by Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" and "Philip Glass' Music In 12 Parts," the musical vignettes (one in each key) explain, examine and express aspects of hip-hop music. He also will participate in a conversation about creativity with Emory Associate Professor Dwight Andrews. Times for both events to be announced.

At 8 p.m. Roumain will perform a concert with members of the Harlem Chamber Players and Sphinx Organization, the unique all-African American and Latino orchestra that comprises top professionals from around the country. From Bach to Bartók to Roumain, the concert will be an intimate evening of cherished chamber music and bold contemporary works.

Titled "Filter," the program sets works from the classical cannon alongside Roumain's own compositions in an effort to show their shared creative impulses. Roumain says, "Many of my works are reflections of those influences, and I've wanted to show and share how composers can and do collaborate over time, across generations, and beyond race."

The concert is part of the 2012-2013 Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series. Single concert tickets are $40. Details about the Feb. 22 events are at www.arts.emory.edu/roumain
