LA-Phil-and-KUSC-Announce-2012-Broadcast-Series-20010101

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Classical KUSC continue their annual radio broadcast partnership, which now reaches close to one million listeners. The 14 concerts, recorded during the LA Phil's 2011/12 season, feature the orchestra with an impressive roster of guest artists and conductors. The first broadcast presents Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 3, "Scottish" featuring LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and violinist Janine Jansen, and airs locally on KUSC-FM 91.5 Los Angeles, Sunday, April 1, 2012, at 4 PM.

Other series highlights include performances by noted soloists: pianists Richard Goode, Yuja Wang, and Katia and Marielle Labèque; soprano Miah Persson; mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená; baritone Thomas Hampson; violinist Leila Josefowicz; cellists Johannes Moser and Ralph Kirshbaum; and guitarist Pepe Romero. Guest conductors include: James Conlon, Semyon Bychkov, Neeme Järvi, John Adams, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Sir Simon Rattle. The series includes a broadcast of the world premiere of Shostakovich's Prologue to Orango (orchestration by Gerard McBurney) conducted by LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen and directed by Peter Sellars, featuring soloists Ryan McKinny, Jordan Bisch, Michael Fabiano, Eugene Brancoveanu, Yulia van Doren, Timur Bekbosunov, Adriana Manfredi, Abdiel Gonzalez, Daniel Chaney, Todd Strange, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.  The series also includes several performances from The Mahler Project, the ambitious cycle during which Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela performed all of Mahler's completed symphonies in three weeks in both Los Angeles and Caracas, Venezuela.  The 2012 KUSC broadcast series culminates with Mahler's Symphony No. 8, "Symphony of a Thousand" recorded in Caracas, Venezuela.

Interviews and features with soloists and orchestra members are heard throughout the series, offering unique insights and giving listeners a more in-depth perspective. Brian Lauritzen is the producer and host for the series.  "I am delighted to continue Classical KUSC's great partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic," says Lauritzen. "I believe the concerts in this broadcast series represent the unique combination of classic and contemporary repertoire that has become a hallmark for the LA Philharmonic. I'm also very excited to include the LA Phil's performance of Mahler's 8th Symphony from Caracas with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and a chorus of 1,100 as the grand finale to our broadcast series."

"Under the leadership of Gustavo Dudamel and Deborah Borda, the LA Phil is one of the most dynamic and innovative orchestras in the world today; it is also simply one of the world's greatest orchestras," says KUSC Program Director Gail Eichenthal. "I can't wait to hear the 2012 broadcast season unfold on KUSC. It's a partnership dating back more than 30 years of which we're so very proud."

"Through our long-time partnership with KUSC, we can continue to highlight all of the magnificent work that happens at Walt Disney Concert Hall, broaden our audience, and share the gift of music," says Debora Borda, President of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. "We owe great thanks to KUSC for their role in this and to County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky for helping to make these broadcasts possible."

Additional local coverage areas include KDSC-FM 91.1 Thousand Oaks, KQSC-FM 88.7 Santa Barbara, KPSC-FM 88.5 Palm Springs, and KESC-FM 99.7 Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo.
