Pianist Minsoo Sohn, Prize Laureate of the 2006 Honens International Piano Competition, will perform a solo recital at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Sohn will perform Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations, Webern’s Variations, Op. 27, and Brahms’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24.

Complete Program:

Webern: Variations, Op. 27

Brahms: Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24

J. S. Bach: “Goldberg” Variations, BWV 988

Minsoo Sohn’s poetic vision and musical intelligence continue to garner praise from critics and audiences alike for his masterful virtuosity and deep musicianship. The latest accolade, published in The New York Times, called his Honens-label CD of Bach’s Goldberg Variations a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation” and named it one of the top classical recordings of 2011. Sohn was born in Korea and moved to Boston in his teens to study with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory where his studies extended from his freshman year to the Conservatory's most prestigious degree, Artist Diploma, in 2004. One of his earliest inspirations was Henryk Szeryng’s legendary recording of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. While the violin first captured his attention, he grew to appreciate the piano’s many voices and tonal colors. Sohn is the 2006 Prize Laureate of Canada’s Honens International Piano Competition, and was also a top prizewinner at the Rubinstein, Cleveland, and Busoni international piano competitions. He has appeared at festivals and collaborated with orchestras throughout North America and Europe. Later this season, he performs on the Gilmore Foundation’s Rising Stars Series. He lives in East Lansing, Michigan, where he is on faculty at Michigan State University.

Tickets are $35, $20 (Students/Seniors $15) available at carnegiehall.org; by calling Carnegie Charge: (212) 247-7800; or by visiting the Carnegie Hall Box Office: 57th Street and Seventh Avenue.
