On the heels of its sold-out and acclaimed season opener featuring countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, dancer Jared Angle and harpsichordist Bradley Brookshire at The Players Club, Salon/Sanctuary Concerts-the series that presents early music in intimate alternative venues-brings back by popular demand From Ghetto to Palazzo, a fascinating concert of works by Jewish-Italian composer Salamone Rossi (c. 1570 – 1630) on Sunday, November 4 at 4:00pm. Performers include the vocal sextet The Western Wind Ensemble with Charles Weaver, lute and Gabe Shuford, harpsichord, and cantor Daniel Singer.

Featuring liturgical works in Hebrew composed for the synagogue and secular Italian madrigals penned for the Gonzaga court, the program also includes compositions for the theatrical troupe of the Ghetto, enjoyed by Jews and Gentiles alike at the height of Counter-Reformation segregation.

At 3:00pm, there will be a pre-concert lecture by scholar Francesco Spagnolo, PhD, Curator of The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art & Life at the University of California, Berkeley, and a host for RAI Radiotre in Rome.

The Stephen Wise Free Synagogue is dedicated to religious exploration, secular equality, and meaningful social service.

Salon/Sanctuary Concerts was founded in 2009 by Artistic Director and soprano Jessica Gould as an alternative to the conventional concert hall. Like no other series in New York, Salon/Sanctuary presents early music performances in intimate venues which evoke the historical ambience of the music. Salon/Sanctuary offers concerts of secular music in elegant salon spaces and performances of sacred music in houses of worship appropriate to the repertoire. Pleased to present special projects that offer the opportunity to view historical issues through the prism of music, Salon/Sanctuary takes pride in many interdisciplinary performances featuring luminaries from the worlds of opera, theater, film, and dance. The series has garnered critical praise for its innovative programming, and continues to attract a diverse audience for its path-breaking offerings and renowned artists throughout the season.
