As part of the William H. Gile Series, The Capitol Center for the Arts presents German music performers Max Raabe & the Palast Orchester Monday, March 5, at 7:30pm. Founded in 1986 by the charismatic baritone Max Raabe, Berlin-based Max Raabe & Palast Orchester embody the high style and musical glory of the ‘20s and ‘30s and have been heard in the U.S., Germany, Shanghai, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Vienna, Amsterdam and Rome in more than 150 concerts each year. Mr. Raabe received his formal education at the Berlin University of the Arts as a baritone opera singer In 2000, the album Charming Weill, an homage to German composer Kurt Weill, was released on BMG Classics. It earned both ECHO Klassik and Super Hits awards and replaced the Beatles as the No. 1 Album on the charts in Latvia. Some of their notable appearances include a 2002 performance for 40,000 people at the opening of the Viennese Festival Weeks; headlining the Berlin in Lights Festival; and appearances at Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, San Francisco’s Paramount Theatre and Royce Hall in La Jolla, California. Max Raabe’s 2004 New York debut consisted of two sold-out concerts at the Upper East Side’s Neue Galerie.

In addition to his work with the Orchester, Raabe can be seen in various movies including 2002's Invincible -- the story of a humble Jewish man who looks to make it big in Berlin. In June 2005, he was awarded the Paul-Linke Ring of the city of Goslar for his "great contribution to the German entertainment industry."

Keeping true to its mission of musical authenticity, the Palast Orchester prides itself in performing original arrangements of classic standards in a setting true to turn-of-the-century Berlin cabaret. Raabe and his orchestra transport audiences to Berlin's Weimar-era cabaret scene of the 20s and early 30s with nostalgic renditions of Cole Porter and George Gershwin classics and cabaret-style parodies of Britney Spears and Tom Jones. The program includes Cuban rumbas, cheerful foxtrots, and elegant tangos, as well as music from the Golden era of dance and film music with hits from the recently released Live in Berlin DVD/CD collection. Appealing to music lovers of all generations, the group performs annually over 160 shows throughout Europe and the Unites States to sold out venues and has recorded than 20 albums.
