The Houston Chamber Choir opens its 17th season with Soul Music of Tchaikovsky, Tavener and Górecki, tonight, September 18, 7:30 pm at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, TX 77002.) The Chamber Choir presents an evening of music of the Russian Orthodox Church with Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Liturgy of St. John Chyrsostom at the centerpiece -- a work seldom, if ever, heard in Houston. Complimenting this masterpiece will be works by 18th century masters Dmitry Bortniansky and Maksim Berezovsky, as well as settings by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov and Pavel Chesnokov.

The concert will round out with two works inspired by the Orthodox tradition; John Tavener's Song for Athene and Totus Tuus by Henryk Górecki. Robert Simpson, founder and Artistic Director of The Houston Chamber Choir describes the Russian sacred music experience, "The passion and richness of Russian sacred music speaks directly to the heart. There is a timelessness about the music that erases all barriers, and together we experience the divine and the eternal as members of the one great human family."

Single tickets are now on sale. Subscription options are also available. For more information on the Houston Chamber Choir, or for ticket sales and season subscriptions, visit the Choir web site at http://www.houstonchamberchoir.org or call (713) 224-5566.

About the Houston Chamber Choir: The Houston Chamber Choir is a professional ensemble dedicated to increasing the awareness, appreciation and esteem of choral music and musicians through performance, outreach and education. Described by Peter Phillips, founder of the Tallis Scholars, as "one of this country's leading ensembles," the Houston Chamber Choir was established in 1995 by Artistic Director Robert Simpson. In April 2012, Houston Chamber Choir made their New York City debut at Trinity Church Wall Street performing A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass. The Choir continued their tour to Yale University at the invitation of the Yale School of Music and the Institute of Sacred Music where they presented a master class and concert in Marquand Chapel. The Chamber Choir will be showcased on a world premiere recording of Psalmi ad Vesperas (1694) by Giovanni Paolo Colonna on the MSR label available in September of 2012.
