The Spencer Theater Presents The Moscow Ballet's CINDERELLA

Featuring more than 50 champion Russian dancers, hundreds of lavish costumes and breathtaking folkloric backgrounds, Moscow Festival Ballet's "Cinderella" dazzles to a degree that proves dreams really do come true. This all-time favorite fairy tale, perhaps the best known in the world, will be presented with full flourish at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 30. Don and Jean Brewer are the signature sponsors of the one-night event. Excellent seats are available for $59 & $56. Gift certificates are also available!

"Cinderella" is the endearing rags-to-riches story of a young girl with a tender heart who finds good fortune, love and happiness through her acts of kindness. The ballet is based on the fairy tale written by the great French storyteller Charles Perrault (1628 - 1703), who also authored "Sleeping Beauty," "Puss and Boots" and "Blue Beard."

True to the age-old fairy tale, Moscow Festival Ballet's Cinderella features a very bossy, unlikable Stepmother and two very vain stepsisters. Cinderella tries to befriend them, but her efforts are thwarted by their jealousy. While the family goes off to a grand ball, Cinderella is told to stay behind and clean the house. Her unjust oppression turns into triumphant reward as fantastic events involving fairies, a handsome prince and a glass slipper whisk her into the happily ever after.
Moscow Festival Ballet's performance of the lyrically charming ballet is under the direction of the Sergei Radchenko, the legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, who founded his internationally touring company in 1989. (The stellar company previously presented Don Quixote and The Sleeping Beauty to Spencer audiences).

The score is by the great Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev and the choreography is by Rostislav Zakharov (1907 - 1975), who was an active and influential figure of Russian ballet while the Soviet Union was in power. It was in 1945, while he was working with the Bolshoi Ballet, that he choreographed this masterpiece. The world premiere of the full-length ballet was in 1945 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and it has since become a staple in the classical ballet repertoire.
The Spencer production is along the first stretch of Moscow Festival Ballet's 17-week U.S. tour in 2010 - and it is the only venue within New Mexico to be graced by the feats of "Cinderella." Don't miss out on this night of beauty and magic! Call the Spencer Box Office today!
