The Vocal Element, Mainly Strings and Old World/New World Set for Riverside Symphony's 2012-13 Season

Founding Music Director George Rothman will lead critically acclaimed Riverside Symphony in three fascinating programs at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in 2012-2013. The orchestra's widely admired programming will be on display in stimulating concerts blending old, new, familiar and lesser-known repertory.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2012, at 7:30 pm - The Vocal Element featuring Heather Buck, soprano

HOLLIGER Sechs Lieder U.S. Premiere

SCHUBERT Selected songs for soprano and orchestra

FAURÉ Masques et bergamasques

MOZART Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter"

As a legendary oboe virtuoso, Swiss composer Heinz Holliger naturally turns to song. Here, his stunning early song cycle- recently orchestrated by the composer-is paired with a selection of sublime Schubert songs adapted for orchestra by Brahms and others. Works by Fauré and Mozart, two composers celebrated for their lyrical gifts, sing with the resources of orchestra alone.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2013, at 7:30 PM - Mainly Strings featuring Arnaud Sussman, violin

NIELSEN Suite in A Minor

VIVALDI "Winter" (from The Four Seasons)

RUDERS Violin Concerto No. 1

TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings

Danish contemporary master Poul Ruders' haunting homage to Vivaldi's iconic Four Seasons, which Riverside Symphony previously recorded for Bridge Records with violinist Rolf Schulte, inspired this unusual pairing of solo violin showpieces. They are framed on this program by a disarming early opus gem by Carl Nielsen, Denmark's first musical giant, and Tchaikovsky's beloved late-Romantic masterpiece.

THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2013, at 7:30 pm - Old World/New World, featuring Inon Barnatan, piano

RAVEL Piano Concerto in G Major

SCHULHOFF Suite

MAXWELL DAVIES Ojai Festival Overture

GINASTERA Variaciones concertantes

Roaring 20s jazz, America's homegrown art, leaps the Atlantic to land in Ravel's popular concerto and Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff's endearingly brash opus. The spirit of the American West similarly infuses Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' overture for a noted California summer music festival, while Ginastera's seldom-heard orchestral tour-de-force injects Native Argentine folk music with a dose of European rigor.

Three Subscription Concerts at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Single Tickets: $55, $40 & $24; Students ½ price. Group rates available - call Riverside Symphony at 212-864-4197 for information www.riversidesymphony.org.
