UWM's Peck School of the Arts Prof. Margery Deutsch Conducts Finale Symphony Orchestra Concert, 4/27

Professor Margery Deutsch celebrates 28 years as the UWM Peck School of the Arts Director of Orchestras with a final concert conducting the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) Symphony Orchestra concert on Friday, April 27 at 7:30pm in the Helen Bader Concert Hall. The concert will feature 2012 Concerto & Aria Competition winners Johanna Schilling, piano and Orlando Pimentel, clarinet. The Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Brahms, Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Copland and Gershwin. Tickets can be purchased at 414-229-4308 or arts.uwm.edu/tickets.

This past March, Professor Deutsch also led the UWM Symphony Orchestra to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York International Music Festival.

Professor Deutsch is retiring after having served as Director of Orchestras and Professor of Conducting at UWM since 1984. She received the UWM Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1990. She has also been the conductor and Music Director of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra's Senior Symphony since 1987.

Prior to taking the UWM position, she served as Music Director of the Shreveport (LA) Symphony. She has worked with many professional orchestras including the Women's Philharmonic (CA), Charleston Symphony (SC), South Dakota Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic (OH) and has guest conducted numerous choirs in the Milwaukee area. She has been a frequent guest conductor for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Youth Concert Series and is in demand for all-state and district orchestra festivals throughout the country. She has led MYSO on concert tours to Switzerland, Austria and France, Scotland, Carnegie Hall, Spain and Italy, Montreal, the National Youth Orchestra Festival in Sarasota (FL), China, and most recently to the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. In 2012, they will travel to Prague and Vienna.

She has studied at Aspen, Tanglewood, and the prestigious Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy and has worked with Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Colin Davis, Thomas Briccetti, Sergiu Comissiona, Samuel Baron and Jan DeGaetani. She holds an MM in orchestral conducting, an MA in musicology and a BA in flute and vocal performance. She has served four terms on the Board of the Youth Orchestra Division of the League of American Orchestras.
