Music Director James Levine Leads The MET Orchestra at Carnegie Hall Today by BWW News Desk - May 19, 2013
The MET Orchestra concludes its 2012-2013 season at Carnegie Hall with the much anticipated return of Music Director James Levine leading the orchestra today, May 19 at 3:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. Maestro Levine is set to conduct the prelude to Act I of Wagner's Lohengrin; Schubert's Symphony No. 9, 'Great'; and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58, with pianist Evgeny Kissin. Maestro Levine last performed at Carnegie Hall with the MET Orchestra on Sunday, April 10, 2011 with Mr. Kissin. (more...)

Clarinetist Thomas Piercy Brings TOKYO TO NEW YORK Today by BWW News Desk - May 18, 2013
NYC and Tokyo-based clarinetist, Thomas Piercy performs two concerts of new music by contemporary Japanese composers based on their thoughts about NYC and works by non-Japanese composers influenced or inspired by Japan. The concerts will be visually backed by projections of photos of New York City by photographer Christina Boers and photos of Tokyo by Thomas Piercy. Many of the pieces have been composed for and premiered by Mr. Piercy. Several of the pieces include the combination of Western classical instruments with traditional Japanese instruments (shakuhachi and hichiriki). (more...)

Ravinia Celebrates Audience with Customer Appreciation Day Today by BWW News Desk - May 18, 2013
Ravinia kicks off the summer with Customer Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, May 18, a day filled with discounts and the chance to purchase limited added Pavilion side seating to sold-out concerts, as well as promotions and samples from Ravinia's supporters and sponsored advertisers. This is the first day that Ravinia's Box Office is officially open for walk-up sales, and all in-person purchases will be discounted by 20 percent (discounts are not available for the July 27 Gala Benefit Evening), making reserved seats for some shows as low as $8. The $7 service fee for ticket orders will also be waived for in-person purchases today, May 18. Gates open at 8 a.m. but the Ravinia Box Office opens at 9 a.m. (more...)

Maestro Hans Graf will conduct the Houston Symphony in his final concerts as Music Director tonight, May 17 and the 18th. Ending his 12-year tenure, Graf will celebrate with the orchestra, staff and patrons in a grand performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. Joining the orchestra will be guest soloists Erin Wall, Bernarda Fink and the Houston Symphony Chorus under the direction of Charles Hausmann. The evening is sure to be one of bittersweet goodbyes and beautiful melodies for all who attend. Regional Orchestra of the Week: Delaware Symphony Orchestra by BWW Features - May 15, 2013
Alfred I. du Pont founded the earliest ancestor of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in the early 19th century. Its name was originally the Tankopanikum Orchestra, which is translated from Native American as “the rushing waters of the Brandywine River”. The ensemble was comprised of a small group of local amateur musicians who were employed as mill workers, doctors, and laborers. Thanks to du Pont's dedication, local interest in music performance was strengthened immensely in a short period of time. (more...)
