Philip Glass to Open 2013-14 Candler Concert Season at Emory

Emory University's Schwartz Center for Performing Arts announces the 2013-14 Candler Concert Series, featuring preeminent artists such as influential composer and musician Philip Glass and superstar pianist Lang Lang, referred to as "the hottest artist on the classical music planet" ("New York Times").

The series also presents the overlapping worlds of classical and pop: artists include Punch Brothers' Chris Thile, mandolin, in a fall concert; and the young, energetic ensemble yMusic in the spring.

Jazz is celebrated in the February program "The Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60"-spotlighting both the great history of the Newport Jazz Festival and its current role as one of the most active presenters of contemporary jazz artists in the world.

Other Candler artists include the national orchestra of Estonia, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, and pianist Inon Barnatan with cellist Alisa Weilerstein; rounding out a rich season of classical, new music, and jazz.

2013-2014 Candler Concert Series:

Philip Glass Festival, Fall 2013
Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. The Schwartz Center celebrates his work throughout the fall, beginning with a concert and residency activities.

Philip Glass, piano with Tim Fain, violin, Sept. 27
In his Emory recital, the legendary Glass performs with Tim Fain, a mesmerizing violinist, seen and heard on the soundtrack "The BLACK SWAN." Glass will also participate in residency activities Sept. 25-27. Details to be announced.

Other related events include the southeastern premiere of Glass Cello Concerto No. 2, Oct. 26 with cellist Matt Haimovitz and the Emory University Symphony Orchestra. Atlanta's ensemble Thamyris performs "Hydrogen Jukebox," a chamber opera featuring the music of Philip Glass and the poetry of Allen Ginsberg (date TBA).

Sasha Cooke, mezzo-soprano, Oct. 18
Radiant American mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke caused a sensation as Kitty Oppenheimer in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of John Adams's "Doctor Atomic," the DVD release of which won the 2012 Grammy for Best Opera Recording. The award-winning singer has performed with operas and symphonies around the world.

Chris Thile, mandolin, Nov. 2
Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon.

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Nov. 15
with Narek Hakhnazaryan, cello
Founded in 1926, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ENSO) has powerfully increased its international scope in recent years. Under the direction of Artistic Advisor Paavo Järvi, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra has recorded several internationally acclaimed discs for Virgin Classics, winning a Grammy award in 2003 and "BBC Music Magazine's" Best Orchestral Recording award in 2006.
