At a celebratory opening ceremony for The Jim Henson Exhibition, housed in a new gallery at Museum of the Moving Image funded by The City of New York, the First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray, the Museum's Executive Director Carl Goodman, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, and City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer were joined by Jim Henson's daughter Cheryl Henson, and special appearances by Abby Cadabby, Red Fraggle, and Fozzie Bear, among other guests. This major new exhibition is dedicated to the life and legacy of Jim Henson, who was a singular creative figure in the realms of television, film, and puppetry-and a New Yorker who made the City his base for family and work. Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to present a special 30th anniversary screening of Sesame Street Presents Follow that Bird, the 1985 film that starred Big Bird in his first big-screen role. The screening on Sunday, July 19, at 1:00 p.m. will be introduced by Emilio Delgado who plays Luis on Sesame Street and Craig Shemin, President of The Jim Henson Legacy and the curator of the monthly Museum series Jim Henson's World.
For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man behind Sesame Street's Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch -- and at 80 years old, he has no intention of stopping. At Museum of the Moving Image's Spring Family Day, Spinney will make an appearance and pose for photos before a preview screening of the new documentary about his life and career I Am Big Bird: The Story of Caroll Spinney on Sunday, May 3, 2015. After the film, he and his wife Debi Spinney will participate in a Q&A moderated by Craig Shemin, President of the Jim Henson Legacy.
Astoria, New York, June 18, 2014—Museum of the Moving Image announces its major film series and exhibitions for the summer. Highlights include a new exhibition and accompanying film series exploring the work of the legendary animation director Chuck Jones(opening July 19), films by Gustav Deutsch (July 25–27), See It Big! Hollywood Melodrama (August 2–31), films by Hong Kong producer, director, and actor Patrick Lung Kong, with Lung Kong and Tsui Hark in person (August 15–24), and a complete retrospective of Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (beginning September 12). Craig Shemin, President of The Jim Henson Legacy and author of the lavishly illustrated and meticulously researched new Muppets Character Encyclopedia (2014, DK Publishing), will present a program featuring memorable moments from the biggest Muppet stars, as well as rare highlights of some lesser known characters featured in his book. The event, on Saturday, February 22, at 1:00 p.m., will include video clips and a Muppet trivia contest with prizes, followed by a book signing. Copies of the book are available for purchase in the Museum store.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has invited 20 super fans to help introduce their favorite movies on-air this April in celebration of TCM's 20th anniversary as a leading authority in classic film.
The imaginative, playful, and creative film and television work of Jim Henson will be celebrated every month by Museum of the Moving Image in the screening series Jim Henson's World, often featuring personal appearances by Henson's colleagues. Over the holidays, these screenings—a Rowlf retrospective over Thanksgiving and daily showings of Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas over Christmas—will also be complemented by family workshops focused on puppetry.

The National Museum of American History received a new donation of more than 20 Jim Henson puppets and props on the anniversary of his birthday—Sept. 24, 1936—from the Henson family. Miss Piggy and the Swedish Chef from The Muppet Show, Bert and Elmo from Sesame Street, and Red Fraggle and Traveling Matt from Fraggle Rock are among the new additions. They will join the museum's current Jim Henson Collection, which includes Oscar the Grouch, Kermit the Frog and the cast of Sam and Friends.
